Durbs out-pouts its rivals

OUR bunny chows are hot and our beaches sizzle - and now Durban has been voted the sexiest city in South Africa, flicking sand in the eye of that muesli metropolis, Cape Town. And not only did we produce the country's most sexy woman, Candice Boucher, but our bicep-bulging Sharks topped the country's most desirable sporting team/personality category, blowing Ryk Neethling out of the water.

That's the result of a survey conducted by those who should know sizzle from fizzle - the organisers of the "adult health, sexuality and lifestyle" show, Sexpo. More than 11 000 voyeurs . . . erm, lifestyle enthusiasts . . . took part in the online survey. While Jozi rat-racers schmooze on their cellphones in tyre-to-tyre traffic and Capetonians "mwah-mwah" each other and meditate on the mountain, Durbanites get down to the sassy business of being sultry.

The sexiest South African women are mostly models, apart from Benoni babe Charlize Theron, who is third on the local list, but sixth in the international stakes. Bootylicious Beyoncé and blue-eyed Cameron Diaz were voted as the "most desirable women" in the world. And when it comes to the runner-up, less is definitely more. Arianna Starr, Ms Nude Australia, was a close and fleshy second. Model Megan Fox scooped the third slot, followed by Durban-born Boucher. Boucher was voted the sexiest woman in South Africa, followed by fellow model Lee-Ann Liebenberg and Hlubi Mboya.

It may sound like an old joke, but what does an R&B singer, the (next) most influential man in the world and two 007s have in common? Well, they all made the top 10 on the "most desirable men in the world" list.

Daniel Craig was top of the heap and another 007, Pierce Brosnan, was in fifth position. Silver-haired charmer George Clooney scooped second place and crooner Chris Brown took a bow at number three. And man of the moment, Barack Obama, is probably the only American politician in (recent) history to be considered desirable by someone other than his wife - and Monica Lewinsky.

The most desirable man in South Africa is veteran thespian Ian Roberts, while actors Clint Brink and Luthuli Dlamini create a Scandal by making it to the top 10. R&B singer Loyiso Bala was second on the local sexy list, and Blue Bulls captain Victor Matfield (hopefully sans his mouth-guard) came in fourth. Clean-cut Sharks player Ruan Pienaar hooked sixth place on the local front.

And the least sexy personalities of 2008? Bilious Luke Watson and woodworking genius Julius Malema.

So, Cape Town can keep its chakras and Jozi can hang on to its jewellery. With the start of the festive season, Durban's just going to get hotter.
